Kathleen brings to Journeys years of nonprofit Board experience. She is excited to use this experience to make an active contribution to Journeys, and work with a Board committed to positioning Journeys for a sustainable future.

Board Members

Nancy Lanphear

Bothell, WA, Songaia Member, Youth Program Elder

Nancy Lanphear has lived in intentional community for 41 years. She and Fred, her husband, along with their children, were voluntary staff of the Ecumenical Institute and the Institute of Cultural Affairs (ICA), serving in Kenya, India and the USA for 18 years. Working with villagers and local governments in these other countries gave their lives a global perspective — and one full of adventure.

Coming to the Pacific Northwest in 1986, they experienced a culture shock that came as a huge surprise. The Voluntary Simplicity movement was growing, and gave them a way to integrate back into their “own” culture, although an alternative stream of it. Along with twelve other families, including Stan Crow – Journeys longtime director – and his wife Carol, they established the Songaia Cohousing Community in Bothell. Nancy has been a contributor to the Northwest Intentional Communities Association since it began in 1993, supporting Fred’s activities, and then becoming a member of their Board from 2009 - 2016. Nancy also worked with Fred as administrators of The Northwest Institute of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine for 11 years, yet another intentional community, founded in the workplace.

Nancy has been connected to Rite of Passage Journeys in several ways since its first journey: a 6th grade trip for teens of ICA staff. Journeys summer basecamp has been located on Songaia property since 1987. There Nancy serves as surrogate parent or grandparent for participants who arrive without their family; supports staff with programs, such as sharing time with the young girls as part of an Elder wisdom circle before and after their journey; and now also serves on the Board.
