The Call of Potent Possibility

Journeys Mentor and Ceremonial Leader Kirt Hodges shares a poem on breaking out of old cages — evoking the mythological Call to Adventure

By Kirt Hodges

One day we opened our eyes
to see fences and walls
we had not before noticed.
This space feels claustrophobic,
the food within the walls
tastes stale and inadequate
to feed the real hunger:
a newly named need.
We don't just need to grab the bull by the horns;
first we need to choose
to climb out of this corral,
to go find the bull
where it lives,
standing stoically
in the center of the path
which leads out
beyond the trees:
the place where lush,
wild things grow
and hide,
waiting to be engaged.
“Are you a fool
or just stupid?”
call the harshest voices
of our compatriots
from the confines
of the cage we need
to leave.
But the bull waits
to be wrestled.
And the Mystery
calls from the woods beyond
with sweet fruits,
savory flavors,
and the potent possibility
of getting hurt.
