Rites & Responsibilities: A Guide To Growing Up Book Launch

  • University Friends Meeting House 4001 9th Avenue Northeast Seattle, WA, 98105 United States (map)

In celebration of the launch of Darcy Ottey’s first book, Rites and Responsibilities: A Guide to Growing Up, join us for an evening of speakers, performance, song, and community discussion. Together we will convene in a gathering of local activists, educators, and community leaders who are dedicated to regenerating cultural practices for healing and justice.

Hosted in partnership with Youth Passageways, Wilderness Awareness School, and WildWise, this evening in community will create space for us to collectively share calls-to-action and listen for how each of us can be part of revitalizing cultural practices for healing and transformation.

About the book:

After more than ten years in the making, Rites and Responsibilities: A Guide to Growing Up is published! This guidebook introduces young people to rites of passage into adulthood: what they are; what they offer; how they came to be stolen, destroyed, or co-opted in most cultural traditions; and how young people take responsibility for their own rites of passage into adulthood today.

Through real-life stories and quotes from young people across lines of race, class, culture, gender, and more; cutting-edge social science research; and step-by-step exercises, Rites and Responsibilities puts useful tools directly into the hands of young people, supporting them to take responsibility for their own healthy development. Meanwhile, this book remains relevant for educators, youth workers, therapists, parents, and others that care about the healthy development of young people--as well as older adults who never received a meaningful initiation into adulthood.
