"I happen to believe that we are all walking repositories of buried treasure."
- Elizabeth Gilbert from her book Big Magic

You are a songwriter. Though you may not know it yet. Our everyday lives are so normal that we often overlook how exceptional we actually are. In this unique creative songwriting workshop, we blend our stories, experiences and memories into original songs using highly personal images and symbols. Participants will uncover the jewels hidden in plain sight from very specific moments of their lives.

This is a folk art process, blending storytelling with songwriting. Through a reflective process we tell a little piece of our story using music and words.

Along the way we discuss musical concepts including lyrics, melody and harmony. As we dig deep into the creative process we also touch upon the role of vowel sounds; play with creating images with words; take a dip into music theory; and develop listening skills. We strategize about what to do when we get stuck, and how to actually finish songs.

All voices are valued and included, without regard to formal musical training or prior experience. Beginning through advanced music students are welcome. An empowering container is established where there simply are no wrong answers.

Participants will:

  • Practice using their own life experiences and imagination to compose music, write lyrics and tell stories

  • Be empowered to know and believe in their own personal creativity

  • Deepen their understanding of music and poetic concepts to communicate creative ideas and talk about music

  • Discuss how to troubleshoot and work through creative roadblocks

  • Have fun
