Restoring Youth Rites of Passage

integrating transformative experiences

How to bring change home

In Context:

Have you noticed that the world and times we live in are saturated with constant and often unpredictable change? From events as large as the pandemic, climate crisis, and political turmoil down to the numerous catalysts for transformation in our individual human lives, we find ourselves in constant flux.

  • How many macro changes in the natural environment and human culture have happened in your life?

  • Do you find yourself frequently drawn to transformative opportunities or to peak experiences?

Alarmingly, the vast majority of this constant change is not being absorbed, and the consequences are becoming increasingly obvious.

  • Maturation is stunted.

  • Digestion is rushed, and nourishment bypassed.

  • Cyclical states of “becoming” prohibit stable states of “being”

  • Overemphasis on individuality and a divergence from community.

While change is necessary, individuals, communities, and the earth itself must be able to adapt to and integrate catalytic events in order to support sustainable and natural evolution.

Why:

Through the lens of Rites of Passage, integration or the “Incorporation” after a transformative event is vital to healthy human development. However, within our current culture it is often the least supported aspect of change.

  • Do you know how to bring major life changes home, to your everyday living?

  • Have transformations in your life been supported by your community?

In our modern culture, the field of Incorporation is complex, and in order to tend to this vital phase we must lean into the inquiries:

  • What practices support the integration of our lived experiences into our bodies?

  • How can we incorporate large and small changes into our habitual ways of being?

  • What is the role of “community” in supporting our full cycles of transformation?

Our Home for this Course: River Root Farm

How:

Our intention is rooted in accepting the maturation that change demands, and embracing thorough transformation. Over 4 days and 4 nights our program will be an experiential inquiry into individual and communal practices of integration.

We will root our process in the Ancestral lands of the Nooksack people, at the River Roots Farm. While we leave our homes to gather together, we do so as an act of service, for our intention must be centered on the benefit of the communities, the lands, the families, the work, and the bodies that we return to.

Who:

The beauty of this program will be woven from the breadth and depth of experience of those who participate. Our invitation is open to all people ages 18-elder who feel called to explore and experience our themes and;

  • Have recently crossed a chosen ceremonial threshold; such as an initiation, a vision quest, a marriage, or divorce.

  • Have experienced an unexpected threshold of change; such as an illness, time of grief, change in work or responsibility, or a relocation.

  • Are responsible for tending change; a guide, a therapist, an environmental steward, or a parent.

Program Details

Tuition: $750-1295 sliding scale

Journeys is committed to making this program accessible to all who are called to it, and we hope that this sliding scale will be of support. We invite you to self-select at the most appropriate amount, given your circumstances, or apply for financial aid if needed. We are also happy to arrange payment plans to help extend the cost over a longer period of time. Consider the following as you decide:

Assuming we end up with a full or nearly full group of participants, we estimate that:

$750 per person will fall short of covering our direct expenses for this program

$900 will cover the direct expenses of this program

$1100 will also cover the general and administrative overhead costs

$1295 will support those needing to pay on the low end of the scale, and will support further investment in program development and relationship-building

Journeys has never turned away a participant for lack of funds. Thank you for supporting this movement towards greater financial equity and transparency!

The Fundamentals Course ideally takes place at our Basecamp at Songaia in Bothell—but not this year!
